Actor Patrick Stewart has stated his support for the bakers in Northern Ireland who refused to make a cake which had a message supporting gay marriage.
Speaking to BBC's Newsnight, Stewart agreed with the Ashers Bakers' decision to not bake a cake which had the slogan 'Support Gay Marriage', on the grounds that they should not be forced to make something they found personally offensive.
Stewart said:
I found myself on the side of the bakers.
It was not because it was a gay couple that they objected, it was not because they were celebrating some sort of marriage or an agreement between them. It was the actual words on the cake they objected to. Because they found the words offensive.
The bakers were found guilty of discrimination and fined for the incident but Stewart says 'I would support their rights to say no, this is personally offensive to my beliefs, I will not do it.
