A graph of #Ireland mentions on Twitter shows that the two most popular topics so far this year, involving us Irish and our lovely island are, celebrating the day of our patron saint, St. Patrick and the day we made history with the same-sex marriage referendum.
The graph, posted by Tourism Ireland's central marketing director, Mark Henry on his Twitter account shows spikes of over 25,000 #Ireland mentions in and around St. Patrick's Day, but more importantly, and perhaps not unexpectedly, on the day of the historic Marriage referendum vote there was over 60,000 #Ireland mentions.
The other spike in March, just after St. Patrick's Day would appear to be credited to Irish rugby's heart attack inducing 6 Nations win on March 21st.
While the reasons for the other peaks in January and February aren't confirmed, there was plenty of speculation as to the reason behind the spikes with one twitter user suggesting that Dick Mack's pub in Dingle was the reason behind the surge. It must have been one almighty session lads.
@JimLarDooley there was a big sunday session in dick macks that day. Twitter was hopping. Like everyone was tweeting about it.
