Last week marked the seven-year-anniversary of Michael Jackson's death. For people of a certain age, it was one of the first genuine 'where were you when' moments; the death of a genuine pop culture icon, a music legend, and a man who had a great affinity with our little island.
You may or may not remember that, back in 2007, the 'King of Pop' paid a secret visit to Ireland with his children, in an attempt to seek refuge from tabloid headlines and past controversies.
He stayed in a private hotel near Kinsale in Co. Cork for two weeks, 19 years after rocking the stage at the home of Cork GAA in front of 40,000 screaming Irish fans.
After Jackon's death in June 2009, the owner of Ballincacurra House - the hotel within which Jackson stayed - gave an absolutely fascinating interview to then Newstalk Breakfast presenter Claire Byrne about MJ's life behind closed doors, including how the singer enjoyed the odd Chinese takeaway, and the fascinating reason behind Jackson requesting that the lights be turned off by 11pm.
The folks at Newstalk have provided us with the interview, and you can listen to it in full here:
