A full 11 years after the show's finale, Friends still hasn't lost any of it's popularity or relevancy. Still played over and over again first on E4 and then Comedy Central over here, the show is synonymous with the 'Will they, won't they?' plot line of Ross and Rachel.
But one of the greatest TV couples also came from that show - Chandler and Monica. Now it's been revealed that they weren't meant to end up together, and we have the show's fans to thank for that.
Speaking at the ATX Television festival in Texas over the weekend, the show's co-creator Marta Kaufman revealed that their relationship wasn't part of the plan, and it was done to the fan's reaction after they hooked up in the London episode that their plans changed:
We had no idea what response that was going get. We had to stop [taping] the show because people were screaming.
The Executive producer on the show, Scott Silveri admitted that the episode where they hook up in London was meant to be a trial, but the reaction of the fans lead to major re-write of their relationship arc such that they end up married and with children by the series finale. Kaufman added later:
We thought it was going to be funny and we were going to get rid of it. Suddenly the audience told us they had been waiting for that and we had to rethink how we were going to keep going and change the relationship.
So thank you Friends fans. We have you to thank for one of the best couples in television history.
