I'd imagine there have been strange things that have happened in courts around the country but this one definitely takes the biscuit.
A 50-year-old man, who has a barring order against him stopping him from entering his mother's house, informed the court that he was "bribed" with an offer of home cooked bacon and cabbage if he cut the back lawn for his mother. Bribed with bacon? Yes you are reading that correctly.
He insisted that he did not breach any order because he ate the meal on the porch, not actually entering the house and that he was bribed because no one could resist his mother's cooking.
Donal Cosgrave, from Co. Kerry told Killarney District Court that he was willing to provide the shoes he was wearing at the time with the grass still on them, to back-up his story.
According to a report from the Irish Times, the judge was very concerned about the time frame of the bacon and cabbage eating.
Was the bacon and cabbage to be given before or after the grass cutting?
Judge James O’Connor enquired. Mr. Cosgrave confirmed that it was before.
You have to have a full stomach for hard work... I did not enter the house, I ate the bacon and cabbage on the back porch. I did not go into the house. And mom gave me some mustard, and a little bit of dessert.
The court was previously told Mr Cosgrave was originally from the US and has health problems.
He had arrived at his solicitor’s office with a pair of runners with grass deposits on them and they were now in an evidence bag, in court.
Judge O’Connor adjourned the case to 21st July but warned his solicitor that Mr Cosgrave “has to stay away completely from the house.”
The things people do for a bit of Mammy's cooking eh?
