Women Are LiveTweeting Their Periods And It's Bloody Hilarious

Livetweeting is nothing new. We all do it, some more rigorously than others, from concert updates to having our say throughout the new Made in Chelsea episode but this new hashtag doing the rounds on twitter is getting very personal, and hilarious. Periods. It's not the first thing you think about sharing with your hundreds of followers but that's exactly what women all over the world are doing.

All women know that bad period cramps feel like your insides are being ripped out but most of us bravely suffer in silence, or take all our hormonal anger out on the nearest, unfortunate human, but now, kind of like a support group, you can share your traumatising monthly ordeal with the world, in an hilarious manner.

#LiveTweetYourPeriod has been around for a number of months but its popularity has been refuelled thanks to a New York Times Magazine article published last week.

In her post, Our Bodies, Our Feeds,  Jenna Wortham stated that while the hashtag appears as women feeling sorry for each other, it is something more than this:

On the surface, this seems like little more than communal commiseration, but to me, it felt like something bigger: a microprotest against a modern paradox. Social media is saturated with images of hypersexualized women, but these are rarely considered as scandalous as content that dares to reveal how a woman’s body actually functions.

Her hope is that the hashtag will help to "normalise, desexualise and destigmatise" a topic that has been "shrouded in shame for far too long".

Bosses the world over, take note. This needs to happen

The fear is real. DON'T DO IT

No they ain't

A plus side?

Questionable

Hot water bottle, comfort food and reality TV at the ready

Is there no end to the torture?

Do you think we are made of money, uterus?

This isn't even an exaggeration

That triumphant moment

Until next time, goodbye
