Irish Times columnist Una Mullally has been one of the most visible campaigners for the 'Yes' side in the marriage referendum.
And she persevered despite being diagnosed with cancer just over two months ago, an experience she wrote about in a memorable Irish Times column.
Today, she tweeted out a particularly horrendous letter she was sent, in which it was suggested that her cancer diagnosis represented 'the will of God'.
The letter, clearly the product of a diseased mind, advised Una to accept the fact that she is homosexual and, rather tangentially, 'not very pretty'. But it did console Una with the idea that their are worse fates, saying 'you might be black for instance'.
We've seen this before and Una reminds people that this is not even the worst letter she has received.
The message underpinning the letter is similar to that of US evangelists Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson who made the novel suggestion that the responsibility for September 11th at least partially lay with 'the pagans, the abortionists, the gays and the lesbians' and a host of other unworthy elements.
The person did sign their name on the letter but Mullally insisted she would not post it.
More hate mail from No voters today. My cancer is the will of God for campaigning for equality, apparently. pic.twitter.com/yFseggqBUq
