The UK audience for the last ever episode of Top Gear as we know it peaked at 5.8m last night but these figures fall well short of what was expected.
In an article this morning the Beeb hinted at far bigger expectations:
The special is predicted to become the highest-rated episode in Top Gear history, beating the audience of 8.35 million who tuned in to see Lewis Hamilton's appearance in December 2007.
However, an average of 5.3 viewers throughout last night episode is still huge and equates to 23% of the audience share, meaning they easily won their slot.
The show itself had a strange feel, fronted by just Hammond, May and the elephant in the room. However, their film about buying SUVs for £250 was a perfect reminder of what made the show so popular.
OHHH I get it. Like, an elephant. In the room. Ehehehehe ??? nice. #TopGear pic.twitter.com/zyYCzr6tXS
