Everyone's talking about the massive twist at the end of this week but few are paying attention to the real issue; namely the trials and tribulations of Tim Riggins.
At the end of the first episode we found Tim in way over his head after he discovered a body on his way back to Dillon. This week, things have escalated even further as he's been appointed on a special detail as an investigator into the murder.

True Detective is quickly becoming a Wizard of Oz type storyline, with Vince Vaughn's character needing a heart, Colin Farrell needing a brain so he can cop himself on and Rachel McAdam needing courage to keep being a cop in this man's world. But we're only interested in Dorothy, AKA Tim.
Here's what we discovered this week:
We finally meet Tim's mother and discover what happened to Lyla Garrity
It seems that in the intervening years, Tim has made up with his estranged mother and regularly comes to visit. Not only that but she drops a bombshell regarding what happened to his old prom date, who we can only assume was Lyla Garrity.
She got fat. I remember her. Couldn't wait to have someone's baby.
Doesn't that sound exactly like Lyla!?
He was involved in some dessert scam
When Tim is packing his things, his girlfriend confronts him about the above article, which, along with the whole blowjob scandal, says Tim was caught up in some Black Mountain Security thing.
This is presumably where he got his scars but all Tim tells her is 'I don't talk about the dessert!' Piecing all the clues and Tim's checkered past (the whole stripping down cars thing) together, we're guessing he was either selling imitation desserts or stealing desserts, and this security company found out and beat the shit out of him.
Tim still has relationship issues
He was never the warm and cuddly Matt Saracan type but Tim seems to have gotten even worse over the years. His refusal to open up to his hot Latin girlfriend finally drives her over the edge and she tells him never to come back.
Only Tyra ever really understood him.
Wait a minute ... Tim Riggins is gay!?
This explains a lot. Perhaps his womanising ways when he was at home in Dillon was a way of hiding the fact that he's actually gay.
The last time we see him in this week's episode he's staring out the window at a male prostitute. Earlier that day he told a story about how he nearly hit a guy in the bank who he thought was coming onto him. Also, let's not forget the fact that he can't get it up for his now ex-girlfriend. Tim is gay and we still don't know if he'll ever get home.
The plot thickens.
